GIS Monitor has a book review for Designing Better Maps: A Guide for GIS Users, by Cynthia A. Brewer (Redlands, California: ESRI Press, 2005). From the review: "She focuses on just a few key questions — how to design a map so that its layout matches its purpose ("Each context will best be served by a different map design.") and how to effectively use type, colors, symbols, and marginal elements to support that purpose — and drills down."
